It didn't smell like good old pork roast I've cooked and eaten my whole life. When I sliced it, it didn't look like normal pork meat either. Not only was the actual muscle consistency wrong, it had a lot of these little holes, like air holes, in it, like if I had thinly sliced it on a deli machine, it would have looked similar to Swiss cheese. So I sent Hormel an email asking what was wrong with this roast, if it was genetically engineered to make it so soft. Here is their actual reply:

Thank you for contacting us regarding Always Tender products.
>
> The meat is not genetically engineered. The Always Tender brand was
> developed several years ago and it is a patented solution that is injected
> into the meat for tenderizing and flavoring.
>
> If you do not care for the texture of this item I would suggest purchasing
> fresh pork such as the Natural Choice label. Any product with the Always
> Tender label will be injected.
>
> We hope you will continue to use the many Hormel Foods products available
> in your area.
> I will be sending you some complimentary coupons for the inconvenience
> this has caused.
>
> Nancy
> Consumer Response Specialist
